🔥 Kurulus Orhan Episode 1 Review: Orhan’s Defeat and the Game of Politics!
Assalamu Alaikum! How is everyone? After many years, our favorite series is back with a new season. But this time, it’s not the story of Ertugrul or Osman; it’s the story of their successor, Sultan Orhan Gazi. The first episode of “Kurulus Orhan” has been released, and what I saw in the very first episode… boss, it was a total “goosebumps” moment!

🌟 Orhan’s Introduction & The 9-Year Siege
The episode begins with the words of a Byzantine commander, Flavius. He was talking about Orhan Bey’s character. Although Orhan was not old, he was extremely patient. He had been besieging Bursa for 9 years to conquer it. But instead of attacking Bursa directly, he was conquering the small forts and villages around Bursa, one by one. No one could defeat him.
However, 9 years is a long time. Orhan’s own Beys (Sahinshah Bey, Avci Bey) were losing patience. They wanted to attack Bursa directly and capture it.
At the very beginning of the episode, we see a traitor, Bugra Bey, giving some information about Orhan’s plan to Flavius. But Flavius’s stance was, “He who can betray his own people, can betray us too.” Saying this, he kills Bugra Bey. This shows what a cunning enemy Flavius is.

🔥 The Heat of the Council & Orhan’s Announcement
When Orhan returns to his camp, he sees his Beys fighting among themselves in the council. Some are saying there’s a shortage of food, others are questioning what they are doing just sitting around for so long. Orhan enters the council and stops everyone’s quarrel. He reminds them how they are straying from the ideals of Ertugrul and Osman, fighting amongst brothers.
The Beys then start pressuring Orhan, saying it’s been 9 years, when will Bursa be conquered? Orhan’s soldiers are also losing patience.
At this moment, Orhan plays his biggest card. He announces, “Bursa will be conquered tonight!” Everyone is stunned! How? Orhan says, “Tonight, we will enter Bursa through the western gate. My spy, Boran, will open the gate for us.” Hearing this, all the Beys become happy and chant ‘Allahu Akbar’.
🛡️ Osman Bey’s Patience & The Next Generation
On the other hand, we see Osman Bey. He is old now, but his vigor has not diminished. He is training his grandsons (Suleyman, Kasim) in swordsmanship. Osman Bey’s plan was for the honor of this Bursa conquest to go to his sons, Orhan and Alaeddin. He was just supporting them from behind. Malhun Hatun is also with him, worrying about Osman’s old leg injury.
Cerkutay comes and informs Osman Bey of Orhan’s sudden attack plan. Osman Bey becomes a little worried. He says that only if Orhan can conquer Bursa peacefully without destroying the city will he be successful.

💥 The Bursa Campaign & The Horrific Betrayal (The Ambush)
Orhan, his brother Alaeddin, and their Alps arrive near the gates of Bursa. As planned, Boran opens the gate from the inside. Chanting “Allahu Akbar,” Orhan’s soldiers enter Bursa. Everything was going according to plan…
BUT, it was a massive trap!
As soon as Boran opened the gate, he was captured. After Orhan and his men entered, Greek Fire erupted all around them, and Flavius’s soldiers surrounded them from all sides. Orhan and his men were not prepared for such a big ambush.
Many Alps were martyred. Orhan also received a severe injury to his hand. They had no choice but to retreat. Orhan somehow managed to get out with his brother Alaeddin, but their brave warrior, Boran, was captured by the Byzantines.
😥 The Shame of Defeat & The Beys’ Murmurs
After this huge defeat, chaos ensues in Orhan’s camp. Orhan himself was very angry and was wrecking his own tent. His Alps were still loyal to him, but the Beys who were praising him just a moment ago are now blaming Orhan.

Especially Sahinshah Bey. He starts saying that Orhan, by acting on his own whim and not consulting anyone, has invited this great danger. Alaeddin somehow tries to calm them down. For Orhan, this defeat was extremely humiliating.
⛺ Tent Politics & The Women’s Circle
Politics wasn’t just on the battlefield; it was also brewing inside the tents. Malhun Hatun had now taken charge of the entire tribe. Orhan’s wife, Nilufer Hatun (Holofira), and Alaeddin’s wife, Gonca Hatun, were trying to create a new “invention” (gunpowder) using bat guano (potassium nitrate) to use in the war.
But Malhun Hatun was very strict. She did not like Nilufer’s independent nature. She reminds Nilufer that she is now a bride of the Kayi tribe, so she must follow the Kayi customs.
There was another problem. Alaeddin’s wife, Gonca, was not having a child. So Malhun Hatun was planning to arrange another marriage for Alaeddin. She was also looking for suitors for her daughters, Halime and Fatma. This was causing tension among the women as well.
When the news of Orhan’s defeat reaches the tent, Nilufer cannot stay put. Despite Malhun’s prohibition, she leaves for the camp to meet Orhan.
🌊 Orhan’s New Move & The Sea Expedition
Orhan was not one to accept defeat. When the captured Byzantine commander told him that food was still entering Bursa, Orhan realized they were smuggling goods through a secret port.
Orhan immediately set out on a new mission with his Alps. They planned to ambush a place called Crow Cape. They caught the lighthouse keeper and learned from him that the Byzantine supply ships were scheduled to arrive at night.

🏛️ Boran’s Captivity & The Great Council
Meanwhile, Flavius was torturing the captured Boran. It is here that Flavius’s true identity is revealed. He was the son of Commander Mouzalon, whom Osman Bey had killed in the Battle of Bapheus. Flavius wanted to avenge his father’s death. But Boran was strong; he wasn’t saying anything.
At this time, Osman Bey calls for a great council. All the Beys are present. But Orhan was not at the council! Because he was then on a secret mission in Gemlik.
In Orhan’s absence, Sahinshah Bey seizes the opportunity. He strongly condemns Orhan for this defeat in front of Osman Bey. He says, “After this loss, the soldiers’ morale is broken. Orhan has failed as a commander. I, Sahinshah Bey, want to take responsibility for this siege!”
Avci Bey also chimes in with Sahinshah. Osman Bey then asks Alaeddin for his opinion. Alaeddin also says that not consulting with the Beys was a mistake. Sahinshah Bey then tells Osman Bey, “If Orhan is removed, Alaeddin could also be given the duty. But right now, Orhan needs to be removed.” All the Beys agree with Sahinshah.

⚔️ Orhan’s Victory at Sea & Octavius’s Capture
While politics over Orhan was heating up in the council, Orhan was making history in Gemlik! As soon as the Byzantine ships arrived at the port, Orhan and his Alps (with Halime also present) attacked them.
This time, Orhan’s plan worked. He seized all the goods, killed all the soldiers, and captured Flavius’s own brother, Octavius! This was a massive victory for Orhan.
😱 MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER!
The last 5 minutes of the episode were pure fire!
Scene 1 (Bursa): A box arrives for Flavius. He opens the box and sees his brother Octavius’s severed head. He goes mad with rage. Hearing of Orhan’s victory, he burns with vengeance. He screams, “Orhan! You killed my brother! I will not fight you for Bursa. I will strike your ‘heel’ (your weakest point). I will destroy your family, your loved ones!”

Scene 2 (The Council): Orhan has still not arrived at Osman Bey’s council. Osman Bey stands up to announce his decision. Everyone is silent. Osman Bey says, “Orhan Bey has brought many victories for 9 years… but he could not conquer Bursa. Therefore, I… DISMISS (remove) Orhan Bey from the position of commander!”
Just as he says this, Orhan, victorious, carrying the severed head of Octavius, enters the council gate. But he doesn’t know yet that his father has just dismissed him. And… the episode ends right there!

🤔 Final Words (Conclusion)
Man, what an episode! On one side, Orhan’s defeat, and on the other, his secret victory. On one side, the politics of the Beys, and on the other, Flavius’s grand plan for revenge. And in the middle, Osman Bey’s difficult decision.
What will Orhan do now? Will he accept his father’s decision? Or will he tell of his victory and get his position back? And who in Orhan’s family will Flavius attack now? Nilufer? Or his son Suleyman?
